Leadership Initiatives

H.E.L.F. was created to Strengthen the Leadership Pipeline for HBCUs.

Using the “Experiential Learning Model” we equip the next generation of leaders with the tools needed to answer the call of leading at tomorrow’s HBCU. H.E.L.F. exposes each fellow to the fundamentals of leadership, while challenging them to define their personal leadership styles and ethos.

Our Initiatives

The H.E.L.F. model:
four action strategies

  • Sponsoring begins from a place of care, pairing Fellows with experienced leaders who serve as advisors. Preceptorships place Fellows with academic administrators in institutional settings to build practical leadership skill.

  • Individual professional counseling, advising, and training sessions are available to Fellows and participants, alongside consultation for institutional leaders on issues of leadership development.

  • H.E.L.F. supports communities of practitioners and provides a forum for sharing insight, best practice, and research — extending to practitioners and scholars who contribute to the H.E.L.F. Blog and Podcast.

  • Annually, H.E.L.F. convenes a four-day conference immersing Fellows in discussion with college and university presidents, administrators, scholars, and industry leaders — through case study, scenario planning, and personal growth.
